BALTIMORE ? Buck Showalter is trying to be upbeat about Dylan Bundy. The news that the 20-year-old right-hander will undergo Tommy John surgery on his elbow wasn?t shattering.
?It?s because of where he was drafted and what our hopes are,? Showalter said.
?He had some hurdles to cross. This might help some in certain situations. Hopefully next year at this time, we?ll be putting a date on when he?s going to pitch again in a game.?
Dr. James Andrews will perform the surgery in Gulf Breeze, Florida.
?This is a procedure that has become, unfortunately, pretty commonplace,? Showalter said. ?I just know where we are, and where we?ve got to get, and we?ll get there. He?ll pitch well for us,? Showalter said.
Showalter has yet to speak with Bundy, but he will.
?You prepare yourself with that with every pitcher,? Showalter said. ?Dylan?s ready to go. When you think about everything he?s been through with this, he just wants get it done, and pitch without any discomfort.?
?You try and keep it from happening but in a lot of cases it?s preordained. You take the precautions you need to take, and hopefully it doesn?t happen.?
Meanwhile, the Orioles were awarded a fourth option for Bundy. Normally, most players have three.
?It?s something that happens that?s normal, and we?re going to fix it,? Showalter said. ?If anybody knows Dylan, he?ll be very diligent with his rehab. If anything, we?ll have to watch him [from] being too diligent.?
