This question came from the survey I?m currently doing ? asking people for their biggest questions about product launches.

I?m going to give you this answer in two parts. First off, I want you to take a good hard look at your offerings ? both your free ?taste? (like a preview call, webinar or video content series) and your actual paid product. Is it something your ideal client REALLY wants? Is it also interesting or entertaining to them? Does it give them a sense of community and connection?

You see, I can give you a laundry list (which I will in a moment) about how to get the word out, but if you don?t have a strong offer ? something that creates its own energy and excitement, it?s going to be that much more difficult to create a buzz around it.

So you have to start with your offer. If your offer is weak, it really doesn?t matter what else you do or don?t do. If your offer is strong, that can go a long way to pulling your launch forward.

Now, once you have your offer, you need to get the word out. Here are a few places to start:

1.?? ?Your own list (including any forums or networking groups you?re in). You want to start with people you know ? if they like what you?re doing they?ll also pass it on. Make sure you tell EVERYONE you know (but don?t be obnoxious about it ? make sure you?re doing it in an appropriate manner)

2.?? ?Joint venture partners and affiliates

3.?? ?Social networking platforms

4.?? ?Blog articles (your own blog and others)

5.?? ?Press releases

6.?? ?Articles

7.?? ?Videos

8.?? ?Online listings (these are both free and paid and include places like event calendars, teleseminar listings, Craigslist, etc.)

9.?? ?Paid ads (there is nothing wrong with paid ads ? it can be a really good place to start if your list and reach is small)

And bikes are vastly more environmental (and, better yet, non-road-space consuming) than Priuses. I am shamelessly anti-authoritarian on a bike the way I am not in a car.

I claim, in my own head (never had to try it on a cop, and don't plan to) that I coast through stop signs and so forth because of the vast importance of Conserving Momentum. And the roadway just "owes" me a little slack because I take up so little of it. And I'm only risking my own damfool neck, I can at most cause others a dent. Or something. If you can get self-entitled by contributing to the common weal that little, imagine how much you get from doing work others value at $900 per hour...

Oscar night isn't only a huge event for the world of movies; it's also a big night for fashion. Over the years, it has become known as the hottest runway show of the year, with the top designers clamoring to get their dresses on the night's nominees, hoping to win a spot on the coveted best-dressed list.

On Sunday night, all eyes were on the actresses working the red carpet, and they did not disappoint. There were pops of color on the carpet, but the big trend of the night seemed to be ladies in white. Gwyneth Paltrow looked glamorous in a white one-shoulder Tom Ford gown with a matching wrap.

MTV Style picks their best-dressed at the Oscars.

"From what I saw walking down the carpet, Gwyneth Paltrow looked amazing in Tom Ford," Janell Snowden of VH1 told MTV News. "She was in the color of the night, which was white."

Rooney Mara, a Best Actress nominee for "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," traded in her typical black garb for elegant white, wearing a lace Givenchy gown with a plunging back.

"I did think a lot about what I was going to wear; it's a long process," Mara told MTV News. "I like to wear white also. I wanted to mix it up. This just happened to be the most beautiful dress, that's why I wore it."

MTV Style expert Mary H.K. Choi agreed that Mara wowed in her Oscar ensemble. "White was a huge trend on the red carpet tonight, and this stark, architectural Givenchy looked absolutely surreal against the phosphorescence of her alabaster skin," Choi said. "She looked just pristine, and the fact that her impossibly shiny, jet-black hair was in a tight bun with blunt bangs really anchored the look. She dresses with a certain severity, given her young age, but I'm a huge fan."

Of course, it wasn't just the ladies in white who stole the show. "The Help" star Emma Stone turned heads in a stunning red Giambattista Valli gown.

"I just loved this dress. There were titterings on Twitter about how people either loved or hated the bow, but I thought a dramatic, festive accent at the neckline looked stunning and complemented the side sweep of her red hair," Choi said. "A risk, definitely, but I think it absolutely paid off."

Stone's co-star Jessica Chastain also made a lasting impression on her first Oscar red carpet. Chastain, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, shined on the carpet in a black and gold Alexander McQueen gown.

"This is a big moment — probably it's the biggest moment of my life — so I needed a dress that was a big-moment dress," Chastain told MTV News. "It's McQueen, and the embroidery and the way it fits — to me, this dress is how I'm feeling right now."

Online games and interactive maps could help pygmy tribes in Africa fight logging and poaching in their area.

Part of the Extreme Citizen Science (ExCiteS) programme, launched on Friday at University College London, UK, the work builds on research from anthropologist Jerome Lewis into data collection in extreme environments. Lewis has been working with indigenous people in the Republic of Congo and Cameroon since 2005 to develop tools for use by non-literate people.

In 2009, Lewis developed an icon-based interface, in collaboration with hardware provider Helveta, that could intuitively be used by the tribes affected by logging and poaching in their forest home. Once familiar with the hand-held device, the hunter-gatherers could use it to geotag trees crucial to their way of life - for example, those trees from which they harvest a particularly delicious, and commodifiable, type of caterpillar. The information was then fed back to logging companies and policy holders to try and save crucial areas of forest.

Now Lewis is moving one step further, making use of developments in tablets and smartphones to enable forest communities to gather multimedia data and feed it into intelligent maps. The data can be displayed on the maps so that users can see how the forest has changed over time.

"As climate change starts to affect the rising and falling of water in the forest, animals become difficult to find and as is the predictability of the arrival of fruits and insects. This has been dramatically affected by climate change," says Lewis.?

"Mapping changes over time will allow the forest people to start to notice the regularities that might emerge as things change. In theory you can start to adapt your behaviour to take account of that".

But one obstacle lies in the way - map illiteracy in the indigenous communities. To address this, Lewis is now collaborating with researchers from the ISI foundation in Italy, who have developed a platform for social games and experiments, Experimental Tribes, to teach the indigenous tribes how to read and interact with the maps they have been creating over the last few years.

Playing Blindate, a collaborative game that requires map-reading in order for two players to meet up, will encourage the tribe members to become familiar with locating themselves and places of interest on forest maps, says the project's Vittorio Loreto of Rome's Sapienza University in Italy.?

?Nearly all Americans in our survey (99 percent) feel it?s good for children to know their relatives and family history,? comments Sharon Snawerdt of Modern Woodmen. Modern Woodmen, a fraternal benefit society offering financial services, promotes strong family relationships through its many member programs as well as its Web site, www.gatherings.info.

Snawerdt adds, ?Ninety percent of survey respondents indicated that spending time with extended family is one of the most important parts of their lives.?

?Holidays are a time when people come home, and grown, mature adults will fall back into those old childhood roles in the family and past hard feelings resurface,? explains Olsen. ?Big sis just can?t get over feeling that baby brother was spoiled rotten, even if they are both in their 40s.?

Olsen says that all family members should be included in the invitation, even the black sheep or the two family members having a feud.

?If someone refuses to come because so and so will be there, there is nothing you can do about it,? she says. ?That is his or her baggage.?

Olsen offers some tips for how to handle family members who may not like to be in the same room with one another.

* Appoint a neutral member of the family to take on the role of mediator. (This person should use humor and tact to encourage guests to avoid touchy subjects. In other words, if Uncle Joe starts discussing Grandpa?s will, the mediator should gracefully make it known that this isn?t the appropriate time to bring up that topic.)

* Assign seats using place cards.

* Set up smaller table arrangements throughout the house.

* Limit alcoholic beverages. Alcohol makes some people braver and more confrontational.

It wouldn?t be the holidays without gift giving, but as families grow larger many struggle with how to handle it. Olsen offers these tips:

* A grab bag. In this system, set a price limit and have each guy bring a guy gift and each gal bring a gal gift.

* A drawing. Each participant planning to attend the event draws a name from a hat (or via phone or email) and brings a gift for only that person.

* A homemade gift exchange. Crafts, food items and artwork are good suggestions. This is for the family willing to invest some time, but not as much money.

* A ?time? gift certificate exchange. These can feature anything from snow shoveling to babysitting services.

* A kids-only exchange.

* A collection of donations for the local food pantry or group sponsorship of a needy family.

The researchers then carefully sanded off the denticles to see how the skin performed without them.

"Sanding the denticles off was challenging, and was one of the more difficult aspects," Lauder recalled. "It's hard to sand them off without damaging the underlying skin. Each foil took several hours to do."

Oddly, instead of slowing down, the sanded foil sped up, which at first glance might suggest these scales were impeding the sharks. Harking back to their idea that sharks are flexible and not rigid, the scientists then glued two pieces of shark skin together to create a pliable membrane. They found that flexibility had a dramatic effect: Toothy, flexible surfaces were 12.3 percent faster than sanded ones. [ Video of shark experiment ]

The researchers also tested the swimming performance of two shark-skin mimics. One was the Speedo Fastskin FS II fabric, whose bumpy, ridged surfaces are supposed to reduce the drag swimmers experience. The other was a silicone rubber "riblet" ? a membrane with sharp-edged ridges on it. "Riblets are being actively studied to put on wind turbine blades to reduce drag, and I believe that one of the America's Cup sailing boats in 1987 used riblets on the hull," Lauder said.

Although the riblets improved the flexible foil's swimming speed by 7.2 percent, the Speedo fabric apparently had no effect at all, perhaps because its bumps were small, rounded and very widely spaced compared with both shark denticles and the sharp-edged riblets. To pin down why denticles might improve shark propulsion, they analyzed how the toothlike scales altered fluid flow around the body. They immersed the flexible shark-skin membrane in a water tank filled with tiny, hollow, silver-coated particles. As they set the machine flapping, they bathed the tank with laser light, which enabled them to see how the membrane set the particles and water swirling.

They learned that shark skin not only reduces drag but enhances thrust.

"The main future direction is manufacturing an artificial shark skin," Lauder said. "The most likely first uses will be to cover underwater robots."

Oeffner and Lauder detailed their findings Thursday in the Journal of Experimental Biology.

Antonio Banderas, who voiced the leading cat in the Oscar-nominated animated film "Puss in Boots," followed up with his own letter in the Huffington Post, urging Hollywood to "please overcome this anti-feline-ism" and consider recognizing Puss with a Golden Collar nod. (No word yet whether the directors of "Kung Fu Panda 2" and "Rango" are demanding panda and lizard inclusion in the competition.)

Forget it, says Golden Collar Awards founder Alan Siskind. His show is just for live-action dogs. As creator of Dog News Daily, a website and marketing firm, Siskind came up with the idea to honor on-screen dogs in January when he noticed how many awards contenders prominently featured man's best friend.

"It was just an excuse to have a party," he said.

But Hollywood really sunk its teeth into the concept.

When Harvey Weinstein's office got word of the Golden Collar Awards, he offered Uggie and a co-star of "The Artist," actress Penelope Ann Miller, to help announce the nominees. With that starry boost, the show, like a Labrador after a tennis ball, was off and running.

Uggie is the night's leading nominee, with nods for his work in both "The Artist" and "Water For Elephants." Besides him and Blackie (real name: Maximilian), the other feature-film nominees are Cosmo from "Beginners," Denver, who played Skeletor in "50/50" and Hummer, who played Dolce in "Young Adult." Small-screen canine stars are also being honored.

Charlize Theron, star of "Young Adult" and longtime animal activist, will receive a special recognition at the Golden Collar Awards.

Siskind says he's already been approached by TV networks interested in broadcasting the show next year, and the Hollywood Reporter has signed on to stream Monday's ceremony on its website.

"Everybody's having fun with it. It's tongue in cheek, but also recognizing the joy that dogs bring to people's lives," he said. "Unlike films and TV shows that only appeal to a particular demographic, an awards show for dogs transcends any socio-economic or gender or political or geographic boundary."

But what about the cats, horses and other creatures who entertained moviegoers this year? They're not eligible for the Golden Collars, but could be among the honorees at the PAWSCARS, American Humane Association's annual recognition of animal actors and the productions that feature them.

The group, which advocates for animals on set and issues the "no animals were harmed" certification to films, commercials and TV shows, has presented its PAWSCARS for the past four years. This year's winners will be announced Thursday.

"We not only base it on the actual film people see in theaters, but we also have firsthand knowledge on how the animal action was achieved," said Jone Bouman, spokeswoman for the American Humane Association's film and television unit, which works on about 2,000 productions a year.

All kinds of animals are eligible for PAWSCARS, she said, noting that a tarantula won best supporting arachnid for its role in "Salt" with Angelina Jolie.

"He was honored for his acting job with the most famous actress on the planet," Bouman said.

Among the categories this year are best use of technology and best scene-stealer, along with the first people's choice PAWSCAR. Voters can cast ballots beginning Friday on the Animal Planet website.

The Humane Society of the United States also honors animal-focused entertainment at its annual Genesis Awards, which recognizes creative productions and news programs for portrayals of animal-related issues.

"We look at the animal-protection message across the board, for all animals," said Beverly Kaskey, senior director of the Humane Society's Hollywood Outreach and executive producer of the Genesis Awards.

"The human-animal bond resonates with almost anybody," she said. "That's why we respond to animals in films and that's why Uggie is getting so much attention in general... They should honor him at the Academy Awards and I hope he comes to our show as a presenter."

Only humans have been nominated for acting Oscars so far, since nominations are determined by fellow actors and no dogs belong to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' acting branch.
