Is it hopeless to try to compute the shortest route to visit a large number of cities? Not just a good route but the guaranteed shortest. The task is the long-standing challenge known as the traveling salesman problem, or TSP for short.

Finding a method that can quickly solve every example of the TSP would be a stunning breakthrough in mathematics. Using complexity theory, such a method would allow us to solve efficiently any computational problem for which answers can be easily verified. Most mathematicians expect this to be impossible.

But suppose that you are handed the locations of 100,000 cities. Is it really impossible to find the shortest route? We are not asking for a solution to every instance of the TSP, just the quickest way around these specific locations.

To take up the challenge, your best bet is to follow Yogi Berra?s advice: ?When you come to a fork in the road, take it.? A tool called linear programming allows us to do just that by assigning fractions to roads that join pairs of cities rather than deciding immediately whether to use a road or not. In this model, it is perfectly fine to send half a salesman along both branches of the fork. The process begins with the requirement that, for every city, the fractions assigned to the arriving and departing roads each sum to 1. Then, step by step, further restrictions are added, each involving sums of fractions assigned to roads. Linear programming eventually points us to the best decision for each road and thus the shortest possible route.

I should add that 100,000 cities is not a hypothetical challenge. Current computations are zeroing in on the solution to a pretty set of 100,000 points created by Robert Bosch of Oberlin College, where the tour traces out a drawing of the Mona Lisa. We may not be able to knock off every example of the TSP, but new ideas can push the frontiers of solvability.

Here is the big picture: complexity theory suggests there are limits to the power of general computational techniques in science and elsewhere. What are these limits and how widely do they constrain our quest for knowledge? That is what research into the TSP is all about.

Congressional GOP pushes for action on taxes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican lawmakers intensified their efforts on Thursday to get quick congressional action on heading off automatic tax increases and revamping the federal tax code.

In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., 41 Senate Republicans said they wanted a vote this summer ? before the November elections ? on preventing tax increases that will take effect Jan. 1 unless Congress acts. Those increases would be a result of the expiration of tax cuts enacted under President George W. Bush and would affect people across all income levels.

"The time to begin is now. Inaction is irresponsible," said the letter, which was led by Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee.

Reid has shown little appetite for letting tax rates fall for the wealthiest Americans and in recent months has staged votes on bills that would raise taxes on them instead.

Separately, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp said Thursday that he wants to combine a push to head off those tax increases with enactment of procedures that would force Congress to revamp the entire tax code next year.

"Doing so would send a clear, strong message to the markets, to employers and families that Washington is serious about reforming our tax code and putting us on a path to sustained economic growth," said Camp, R-Mich.

Republicans want to prevent tax increases for all taxpayers, while President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats prefer letting tax rates rise for the highest-earning Americans.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said this week that he plans to have a pre-election vote on heading off the automatic tax increases. That measure would likely go nowhere in the Democratic-led Senate.

Even so, Republicans hope that such a vote would give them a chance to demonstrate their support for tax cuts during the run-up to this year's presidential and congressional elections. Most Democrats would be likely to oppose such tax cuts unless the wealthy were excluded from them.

The six GOP senators who did not sign the letter to Reid include two facing tough re-election fights this year, Scott Brown of Massachusetts and Dean Heller of Nevada.

It would cost the government an estimated $5.4 trillion over the coming decade to renew the Bush tax cuts, extend a temporary reduction in the alternative minimum tax and this year's Social Security payroll tax cut, and keep alive a collection of other expiring tax breaks.

A big, expensive collection of budget events will also occur in January, including the start of $1.2 trillion worth of spending cuts and the expiration of this year's Social Security payroll tax cut. In addition, the government's borrowing authority is expected to expire around that time.

That confluence of events has fed expectations of a frantic postelection lame-duck session of Congress to address those issues, though many expect final decisions to be postponed until next year.

Sphynx

The Sphynx cat, or ?hairless cat?, is probably one of the most ?love it? or ?hate it? breeds of cat out there. Although they?re known as a ?hairless? breed, some actually have a downy fur covering their body. Sphynx cats have different ?coat patterns?, too. Their skin can be pink, black, solid, spotted?you name it! Sphynx cats are a fiercely loyal breed, and require an owner who will give them a lot of love and attention. They also require someone who will bathe them regularly to keep their skin from becoming greasy. Sphynx cats are often described as feeling like a rubber hot water bottle!?

Savannah Cat

The Savannah Cat is a new and controversial breed created by crossing a domestic cat and a Serval. Savannah Cats vary greatly in appearance, temperament and price depending on their breeding. An F1 (a first generation cross of a cat and Serval) is the most expensive and the most ?wild?; with each outcross, the cost of the cat goes down because there is less Serval ?in the cat. Savannah Cats are very large and maintain some of the ?wild cat? characteristics like growling and hissing to communicate (unlike the normal kitty meow), the strong desire to be outside (many walk great on a leash!), and the occasional unfortunate aversion to using the litter box. Savannah Cats are definitely not a breed for everyone, and much research should be done on their special care requirements before considering one as a pet.

LaPerm

LaPerm cats have soft, curly/wavy coats caused by a spontaneous genetic mutation. They first showed up in the early 1980?s in Oregon. They come in all coat colors and patterns, and are sometimes described as feeling like mohair. Though there are other breeds of rex or curly-coated cats, the LaPerm does not seem to be directly related. Despite the fact that the breed is only about 30 years old, LaPerm breeding programs now exist all over the world. LaPerm cats are considered to be more hypoallergenic than many other breeds, though there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic cat.?

American Curl

The American Curl is another newer American breed, first noticed in the early 1980?s. They have ears that curl back towards the back of the head, caused by a genetic mutation of the cartilage. The curled ears do not cause any health or hearing issues for the cat, though they do require frequent cleaning. American Curl owners must be careful when handling the cat?s ears, as the cartilage can be easy to damage.? All American Curl kittens are born with straight ears, which begin to curl within the first 2 weeks. It takes about 4 months for the cat?s ears to reach their final curled shape, at which point they become stiff to the touch.

Munchkin

There is only one way to describe the Munchkin cat- ?low to the ground?! Due to a genetic mutation, Munchkins have short legs that give them their unique, short stature. Among breeders and cat fanciers, the Munchkin is a controversial breed. There have been disputes over the ethics of breeding a cat with legs as short as the Munchkin, and differing opinions on whether short legs can cause issues with mobility and the health of the skeletal system. So far it seems that Munchkins can run and jump as well as any other breed, and significant spinal and other skeletal afflictions do not appear common. The breed is recognized by TICA and other affiliated organizations, but the CFA does not accept the breed. Some countries have even outlawed the breeding of Munchkins for perceived ethical reasons.?

Q&A: Meet The Beautiful People's Club | GamePolitics

Zach Wigal from Gamers Outreach sits down with another fine game-related charity called The Beautiful People's Club to talk about their efforts to raise money in the fight against the ugliest thing on planet earth: cancer. The group has an event planned for May 19 that you can find out more about at the link above. Zach's interview with Jason Fishman and Martin Brinkley of The beautiful People's Club begins now:

There?s been an explosion in gaming related charity activities in the past couple years. From the record success of Child?s Play and Extra Life, to the efforts of individual gaming personalities, there doesn?t seem to be any slowing down. Video game enthusiasts are finding ways to combine their passion for gaming with charitable action and a new field of philanthropy is in the midst of being pioneered. Perhaps the most impactful component of this growth is the empowerment of gamers through websites such as Twitch.TV and YouTube, which are providing non-profit enthusiasts with a new platform for connectivity. For gamers, it doesn?t take months of organizing, thousands of dollars in overhead costs, or extensive call to action campaigns to raise money for charity. The average Joe can turn on his streaming equipment, recruit friends, and spread awareness through social media, bringing together a community of people to generate resources for favorite charitable causes.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with a gaming community called The Beautiful People?s Club. A relatively small group of gamers, The Beautiful People?s Club identifies themselves as a group of mature, friendly gaming enthusiasts whose community has grown modestly over the years, but still very much remains a grass roots, tight-knit group. Despite their small size, the Beautiful People?s Club has been able to generate around $10,000 in revenue for charity causes through an annual streaming marathon hosted by members of their community.

Come May 19th, they?ll be hosting their third annual marathon in support of a non-profit called Stupid Cancer, an organization that provides a variety of resources for individuals battling cancer. It doesn?t take more than five minutes to realize how passionate the Beautiful People?s Club is about this cause. I sat down with Jason Fishman and Martin Brinkley, two of the streamathons organizers to learn more about their event and what challenges they?ve faced along the way?

Zach: Thanks for taking the time to chat guys. For starters, what is the Beautiful People?s Club?

Jason: We?re a small community of gamers. We?ve tried to keep ourselves small, in some sense. We don?t publish or post much. Every year we host a charity event, but it?s a small effort.

Martin: We like to approach charity from a grass roots scale. We don?t like to pressure people into giving ? we?re just trying to raise awareness, primarily.

Zach: How successful has your charity marathon been in the past, and what organizations have benefitted?

Jason: The first year was for Child?s Play, but the marathon was strictly 24 hours of Red Dead Redemption. Our second event was for Stupid Cancer. We?ve raised around $10,000 between those first two events. When it comes to choosing the cause, it?s really about what our community wants to get behind.

Martin: We kept falling back to cancer related charities.

Jason: The big thing with stupid cancer was you could see the results. They?re a great foundation / support group of people who are willing to help people battling cancer.. It?s a very important cause for us. We?ve done a lot of research on a number of charities. This is one for us that?s making a noticeable difference. It?s really tangible for us.

Martin: One of the things that hits home is that it directly relates to our demographic. We have members between the ages of 16 to 68. All over the world, all ages, but this hits home because cancer is something we can all relate to. People fighting cancer - they?re our next door neighbors. This charity provides community support, legal aid, & financial aid for people fighting the disease. There?s a whole wealth of a community that really impressed us.

Zach: It seems like the community component of Stupid Cancer ? the support they provide for individuals ? is something you?ve heavily considered and decided to support. Do you think this stems from your love for gaming communities and the type of camaraderie they offer?

Jason: It?s interesting you bring that up. If we get sign ups in any given year, it?s a surprise for us. We?re just a group of people sharing what we love, and we happen to be really focused on this cause ? it?s a big deal for our community. We really want to raise awareness for this group.

Martin: We were really inspired by Extra Life. We saw what they were doing and thought, ?that?s something we can do to.? Maybe not on such a grand scale, but we wanted to do something like that.

Jason: We went overboard the first year though. We focused on one game for 24 hours. Playing one game for that much time is pretty difficult!

Zach: On the note of difficulty, what kind of struggles have you guys faced in organizing this event?

Jason: We?re old people. When we play games for 24 hours ? that means something! Anybody who comes on ? they?ll see it. By hour 18, we?re loopy ?

Martin: We?re a bumbling mess?

Jason: It?s really a big job organizing these things. When you?re at the point where it?s time to play the game, you?re already exhausted.

Martin: And that?s coming from a group of hardcore gamers that play 5 or 6 hours a night. We play 6 or 7 nights a week. We have groups of people you?ll catch on team speak any time of the day.

Jason: So there?s definitely a sacrifice. We can?t compare to people with cancer or people who are working coal mines for days. It?s not a comparison, but it?s different. For 24 hours we suffer in our own way.

Martin: As much as it?s about raising money, it?s about raising awareness.

Jason: For the people being diagnosed with cancer, this is a support group. They?re not just trying to support the community with financial goals, they?re trying to help. I haven?t personally had cancer, but this tugged at my heart strings. There are people that really need help, that really need to get through the next day, and they?re on stupid cancer trying to put their lives back together.

Martin: One of the things that hit home with me was reading on their forums about a child who couldn?t see a pediatrician because he was 17, and couldn?t see an adult doctor, and he was in a quandary because he had just been diagnosed with cancer. These guys were there to help him and find people he could see.

Zach: Can you tell me a bit about Stupid Cancer?

Martin: They provide legal, financial ? all types of support to people with cancer.

Jason: I?ve seen a few people in there who have been family members of people reported with cancer. They offer all types of support. If people are misdiagnosed or in need of any help, Stupid Cancer supports them.

Martin: They have camps where people can learn about cancer. The organization entirely supports it. They explain to people what they have and the consequences of different treatments. They have a weekly radio show every Monday at 8 PM. It?s absolutely jam packed with information. Some of these cancers are directly related to younger people, which I had never realized. I didn?t know there were certain cancers that attacked people at a younger age. But these guys bring that to the forefront and they provide the means to provide support.

Zach: What is your take on games being used for charity?

Martin: I think it stems from games coming out of the bedroom and becoming a bit more mainstream. They?re more socially acceptable now. If you go back 20 years you wouldn?t have seen a gaming commercial. Now they?re everywhere. That just tells me that socially, video games are way more acceptable. More people are playing them now than ever before. It?s just a natural progression. The thinking process goes something like ?You know what, I want to do something for charity. Well, I play video games. Let?s incorporate that.?

Jason: There?s definitely a much larger user base than 2 or 3 years ago. You could look at the Starcraft streams. Some of these guys are raising $60,000 just because they stream Starcraft.

Zach: So I have to ask, what?s the inspiration behind the name ?Beautiful People?s Club??

Jason: Family Guy. I started this 6 years ago. We were just a Guild Wars guild. We all got together on the PlayStation forums and wanted to find a place where we could post about stuff we wanted to post about on different games. So we created our own forum and we had 150 members in the first two weeks. A lot of it has been putting time in coding and doing a lot of events. We?re at 620 members now.

Zach: How can people be involved with your upcoming event?

Martin: Please spread the word. We want to generate awareness for this group. Obviously we hope you donate to, that?s what a charity event is about.

Jason: But it really is about generating awareness. This forum is a great resource. There are people who care about your life ? about helping you with your fight in cancer ? and helping them grow that community is our ultimate goal. We?re just really impressed with this group, and they truly care about the people they help.

Aviary finally releases a Windows Phone SDK

Aviary is one of the better photo editing suites available both for web-based photo editing, and on mobile as well. The Android and iOS SDK was released last September and has become a part of dozens of apps, and now the SDK has finally made it to Windows Phone. The SDK was announced a few months ago, and was released yesterday to allow Windows Phone devs to add the photo editing suite to their apps.?

The SDK has been redesigned completely to allow devs to work within the Windows Phone Metro UI. Even so, Aviary still says that it should only take about 15 minutes to implement the tools into an app, which seems pretty quick and easy to us. It's also possible to customize the color theme and the size of the tools within the app, not to mention all the rest of the tools you'd expect like color and lighting adjustments, crop, sharpness, and even stickers and things if you'd like.?

According to Aviary, early bird partners are Rowi, 4th and Mayor, Rekap, and Postcard on the Run, so we should see the photo editing tools hit those apps pretty soon. Anyone else who wants in can grab the SDK for free from Aviary.?

Rising rates of childhood obesity pose a serious public health problem. Excess weight increases the risk of several chronic diseases, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

As children are being diagnosed with these ?adult? illnesses early in life, how healthy can we expect them to be as they get older?

Solving the obesity problem is a complex issue; however, researchers from University of California-San Diego and the University of Minnesota recently uncovered some important advice for parents. Obese youngsters are far more successful at losing weight if their parents get in shape with them.

In the study, researchers looked at 80 sets of parents with overweight kids ages 8 to 12. Numerous factors were studied, including parenting style and changes in the food environment at home.
